Welcome to The Comic Box. This is a discussion thread for the GI Joe comics. We start at Marvel’s #1 and move thru the series every Wednesday. It’s a chance to give your thoughts, opinions and remarks about the comic in question.
#25. Zartan!
~Short Summary~
Storm Shadow taken to Alcatraz after being captured at the end of the last issue. Gung-Ho, wounded by Storm Shadow, notices that Snake-Eyes has the same tattoo that Storm Shadow has on his left arm.
~Notes of Interest~
First appearance of Zartan and first significant appearance of Firefly and Wild Weasel. A lot of first appearances: the Dreadnoks, Mutt & Junkyard, Tripwire and Deep Six to name a few. Storm Shadow escapes from Alcatraz. Wild Bill's frustration with Deep Six is pretty entertaining. Get to see G.I. Jane, the Joe's freighter!

I loved this whole story arc. I loved how many issues it covered. It felt like this was 1 biiiiig story, all the way up to the end of the Cobra War. That's how I'd like to see comic books today; where something that happens back in #18 can effect things all the way at #75 or whatever, y'know?

Good story.Sonnelion has it right, this issue is a great set-up for a LONG story arc. That's one reason I love the comic,it's like a soap opera, every story building on the past.
I remember that this issue had a commercial to go along with it-featuring Deep-Six's spectacular "above-&-below" attack against the Water Moccasin.Cool!

As everyone has already said, it's that "long range" continuity that made the Marvel run so great. Poor old Wild Weasel though, after a cool introduction, virtually faded into oblivion as a character.

You gotta love how CC punk's Destro and Firefly which sets them up to be very annoyed later on. And in fact, it would seem that Firefly in the DD teamed w/ Serpentor/Mindbender (remember that SUPERBAT story???) and is his own duder. THAT'S very cool. As much as I don't like 90% of what DD has done w/ GI Joe, I do like that they played off Firefly fairly well. Made him the bad booty sabateur he is, lurking in the shadows, a merc for hire, etc. Unlike Destro who went all weird...
You gotta love that sequence of Junkyard leading the Cobra into quicksand! (I know, probably not THIS issue but...)
I'm rather unaware of any other comic actually having an ongoing storyline like this. X-Men? No. Batman? No. Superman? No.
1 thing I gotta say is that with GI Joe's gigantic cast, it really never gets old seeing GI Joe battle the bad guys. I think we can all handle seeing Joe vs Destro. Or Joe vs Scrap Iron, Firefly, etc. I believe the toys skew our view a bit since we get so many rehashes. But if there were no toy, would we mind the use of Storm Shadow (uh, give or take the weird ninja mental stuff). Like, in the old Marvel book, it was always a rotating cast of bad guys. Other comics, it gets old fighting Doom every few issues or Dr Octopus or Venom or or or... You get the idea.

I really wish I'd read all these issues more than just one time so I could comment on them. I think I remember this one, but I'm not sure. Maybe I should re-read all my TPBs.

I do have to take issue with this statement, though. The X-Men, especially in the 80s and 90s, were just one really long, continuing story. Anything that has a long run written by the same writer, such as Chris Claremont on the X-Men (17 years), Peter David on the Hulk (10 years), or Mark Gruenwald on Captain America (10 years) tends to be like that.
