View Full Version : Building a new Toy company...?

I was emailing a friend the other night and she asked me a question;
If you could do any job in the world, (regardless of whether you have the qualifications or not, for when you take the job *POOF* you are granted the qualifications) what would you do?
At first I thought Porn star! But reality set in! What would you have to live for when you get bored with your job? Could you imagine? "No! I don't wanna go to work and make love to five beautiful women!!" LOL! Anyway.....
I got to thinking...If I could do my dream job, what would it be? I'd wanna make TOYS! I'd want a company where instead of Marketing consultants and Lawyers telling us what to make, (And this is a RADICAL IDEA!! HOLD ON TIGHT!!!) we'd ask....KIDS!! Build Prototype toys. A whole room full and let a bunch of kids come in and make the ones they would play with the most. Kids would be our R&D, our Marketing research, and our QC! If they can break it, back to the drawing board...how can we make it better?
The issues I see with this; Legal: Parents wanting $$ for the toys their kids helped design, test etc. Practical; What kind of investors would invest in a company that uses kids as the model for R&D, Marketing and QC? Funny, but you would figure for products made FOR kids, that this would be common sense...but Alas..it's not. Most of the problems with building a toy company that is based in FUN is that no one will invest or take you serious until AFTER the idea catches on.
What do you guys think??

Sounds like a really good idea actually. Like you said, parents might become overly involved and investors would probably hesitate a little. I'd like to be one of the people testing the toys myself; like Tom hanks in "Big".
I've often thought of applying for a job with say, Hasbro, and telling them I'm a big fan of some of their lines, then telling them where they hit and missed. I'm sure of they followed some of the boards they'd get a lot more feedback then their test groups could give.

Trust me, I've thought about it. I would try and cover the toy areas that Hasbro might not be covering.

You know with all the talent out there (Marauder John, Alyosha, Trier, Trigate Creations) we could probably pool our talent and spank Hasbro in toy sales. We know better than a bunch of corporate business geeks what fans REALLY want!
And the first time we had an open forum and told someone "We have no plans for that right now, but we may look into in the future" or some other Ambiguous BS answer...I'd bitch slap them! LOL!
How about a "yeah, that sounds like a great Idea!" or a "No, other than you, we don't think anyone would be interested!"
First order of Business....making an Osprey and some Russian vehicles 1:18 scale! Then making a 1:18 scale Landing craft. a BIG Landing craft...something that can drop a Mobat, hiss or Humvee on a beach. With NO Over Gun (OG) and no stupid colors!

I tell you what would sell now adays its computer games. So you got toy tie-ins with that. Create a computer game then a figure line its my suggestion.
As for asking kids what they want out of their toys I think the mayor toy companies let children come visit their factories and play with their concept toys, the ones who get picked up first gets made I think. Its my theory on why all the Joe figures became more and more neon after a while.

Could this be the beginning of a JoeDios exclusive figure?

well primarily i'll start by answering your question by asking you a question. if that's alright..
looking at the post you've set forward i see only one thing holding you back, and that's finance..
so run with the idea for a second, get some totally courageous people from joe dios.. arrange a date/time and meeting place.. and meetup.. draft up and pool your resources together.. and start this toy company..
I know your saying that if it was in your dreams.. and you dont have the qualifications.. but there are people out there that do, and have the finances to back it all..
the only thing aside from that setting you back is you ... if you generally want to do something.. and want to become that person.. you have to put 100% in without ever getting a guarantee back for it..
if you want to do it.. do it.. you'll only ever get one shot at life.. you best make it count for all you got in the tank.

HEY!
I have my dreams and fantasies too! Some of you have seen the Samurai Wars comic project I work on on and off. My dream was to provide kids with a toy that doesn't get much love. Samurai! Ninja... I mean, in a more serious way.

I took the camera from an old playset and made some repros. Its only 1/2 of the camera. I figure I can point them in a direction when taking a photo, the good side shows. Im working on a better mold to make a complete cam. What do you guys think so far? Would you use them if they were avail to you? Id definately help to get this new company going!!
