Roadblock is now called Heavy Duty because of a trademark issue;
Taken from hisstank

So, did they actually ignore that Heavy Duty was a distinct character and just amalgamated them into one?
Does this mean that Heavy Duty in the upcoming movie is actually Roadblock?
I'm confused...
Why couldn't they have gone the way of Main Frame/Data Frame or Shock Blast/Shockwave ?
Pathblock :p Roadhinder? I dunno, but c'mon, they could have done better then calling him Heavy Duty...

I am calling BS on this one, This is the EXACT same thing they said when JVC hit and HD was basicly given RB's personality. The following year (Spy Troops) everything was settled and RB was back, however HD had become his "clone" even up to VvV.
But I have a hard time believeing that after all the stuff that went on to get the name back (remember the repainted roadblock called "Double Blast" yes they tried that far back to get the name) that they would let it slip again.
Edit: where did you see this, I am up to page 3 and I see nothing. its a six page thread so help would be great.

Well ...........
1.) If the character rhymes in his speaking parts, it's gotta be Roadblock.
and
2.) The director had to decide between Heavy Duty and Roadblock, he choose Heavy Duty due to the fact that the character "looks right" for the movie.
Between fandom/geekdom and Hollywood, it looks to me that Hollywood has the last say on things. Booo...

Hollywood is where the money is, who cares about twenty-seven years of history?

It was on the front page for the article - not sure if its in it because I just skimmed it at work :-s
But here it is:
A few other tidbits to emerge during the Q&A portion of the panel included: Roadblock is now called Heavy Duty because of a trademark issue; Lady Jaye might be back; the team has talked about a G.I. Joe versus Transformers story, but that's as far as it's gotten solight after Origins; a Dreadnoks s far; Hama will work on a Spotlight on Snake-Eyes and then another spotlight will be done eventually; expect more villain books after Cobra; a Beast-era Transformers story was planned but has been pushed back a bit; the whole creative staff is working together on the overall direction of these stories, and they do a lot of inter-office hugging too; and lastly, Larry Hama does not want to run for President.

WELCOME TOO 2002!
The Roadblock/Heavy Duty thing was a Trademark issue 7 years ago, now it's "Well Heavy Duty is named after a Hasbro employee, let's use him too be a good sport" If there was a trade mark issue you would have never seen 2 Roadblock's used in the 25th line now would you?

Roadblast would be the new code name for Marvin Hinton.
Or how about "Bubba"?

I don't know if ARAH made Heavy Duty the cousin, but from JvC (due to trademarks), Heavy Duty became the big, black, machine gunning star. By the time they could use the Roadblock name, HeavyD was pretty much in place. As well, I think it was in Spy Troops where HeavyD uses grenades to cook. He doesn't rhyme and I think there's even a reference that HD is RB's cousin! Going by the bastard era canon, HD can't cook nearly as well as his rhymin cousin!
Oh well.

What are they going to do when the trademark issue is solved? Are they going to re-introduce Heavy Duty and call him Roadblock?
I were hoping for interaction between Roadblock and Heavy Duty in the new comic to show the diffrent aspects of the characters.

I like the idea of both guys chilling with each other.
What will most likely happen is that Heavy Duty will be the top gunner and Roadblock will be the 'other guy who came later'.

Spy troops movie is where the HD and RB thing was suggested first.

Yeah I recall hearing that somewhere before :)

IIRC, Hasbro lost the rights to Lanard for a time. They had to scramble to get the rights back when Lanard let them expire.
From what I understand, there are trademarks for LOTS of aspects. Check this out:
Rights for character name.
Rights for visual character in print
Rights for visual character in movement (Cartoon, movie, live action, etc)
There were 2 others but I can't remember.
Just because you can get back a name like Roadblock, doesn't mean he can have his likeness apparently.
AND I've read/heard that it is incredibly hard to grab 'normal' names. Scarlet, Stalker, etc. That's why, if you guys really bothered to notice (I didn't really care myself) why you got Agent Scarlet, or Ralph "STEELER" whatever, and so on. But anyway...

[/QUOTE] Roadblock likes rap, Heavy Duty likes hip hop. Original Heavy Duty was a mortar guy I think he should be a bit better educated but more inexperienced than Roadblock.

heh, maybe in a few years the Character would be called Heavyblock or Road-duty (sounds like a crossing guard). :p
But yeah they are different characters, especially if you have followed sigma 6 for just a second.

Honestly Trenchy, that's not a bad idea. But let's face it, Roadblock was the ursurper to the machine gunner throne (taking it from Rock N Roll). Too bad Repeater got lost in the shuffle!
I think it'd be fun to make them brothers or close cousins. Make them both machine gunners. One's a good cook, one's a horrible cook. One has hair, one doesn't. (I don't know if HeavyD has hair or not...) One uses a gnarly chain gun, the other uses his DeuceMa (or is it Ma Deuce?). But when both come walking down the field, Cobras who aren't fast enough to get out of the way, are dead. Two look-alike machine gunners doesnt' make sense? Well, Cobra has WHOLE squads of SawVipers running around don't they? Besides, think Vasquez & Drake from Aliens. But do not think Drake and Josh, please! :D
