Greetings mortals!
I have recieved many requests to explain how I was able to modify Star Trek Uhura's head to fit on a Joe figure. So here is a very brief how-to.
Steps:
Pull off that head. It comes straight off. There are two types of plastic here. One is the soft and flexible plastic that forms the head. The other is what I call a neck core. It's really hard.
Cut around the neck just below the chin area, all around the figure. The neck core does into the neck area just about at the same level as where the chin is. You might find yourself cutting into the core or scraping the top/ending of it. You really want to get this out.
Drill a hole that the neck peg can fit into. Find a drill bit that is the same diameter as the ball part of the Joe figure's neck. With Uhura's head and the Baroness's body, I found drilling up to a little past eye level will be about the right amount to drill. Drill slowly.
Rounding the neck hole. To help the neck pivot, I use a Dremel drill bit that has a sanding ball that fits all the way into the neck hole. Here, I slowly, very slowly, drill until there's a slight cavity. I do this very slightly because I don't want to make the head too loose. The heads I have done tend to fit tightly. I do this step with my hand instead of a Dremel drill.
Put the head on the neck.
Cut excess neck material from the head. Following Hasbro's design on Joe heads, the chin and jaw are free of any neck material. I try to follow this by trimming the neck material away so that the jaw looks more like a Hasbro's jaw area, and will also cut away neck material around the base of the head where the hair begins so that the head would look like it was designed for that neck.
Well, there it is :-) Very simple, but I hope you will find it useful.
