It's interesting to get everyone's "take" on subjects like this-I wish I had General Scarlett's and Flint's imaginations! :p I'm too "retentive" probably! :D
One other thing that might interest you guys-I made my younger brother change ALL his figure's Codenames because I had the REAL Joes. :p He did a good job-his Joes were a joint Navy SEAL/Marine Recon Team called WOLFPACK! He made Torpedo his leader-"Lt.JG Sanderson",Duke became "The Gunny",Shipwreck was "Chief Wilson",and he gave Rock 'n Roll Breaker's Com gear and called him "Data"-this was years before Star Trek:TNG. :) |
The filecards do play a pretty big role for me, especially with all the characters who got little to no comics exposure and therefore don't have another source to draw from in exploring their personalities. The Lifeline: pacifist thing is a good point, though -- v1 having that pistol totally went against his character unless he only uses it for warning shots or something... Remember, though, when looking at filecard descriptions of his character that the RAHC and Anti-Venom versions are actually a different guy...!
With the ranking I tend to ignore the filecards now since so many characters' grades have jumped all over the place, particularly the huge jumps in '97. I go by the setup the comics pretty much use too, which is the notion that the GI Joe team as a unit has its own command structure which doesn't have to strictly follow grades from the other branches of the military. I ultimately refer to the organisational chart from DDP's Battle Files, which suits my history of growing up with Action Force since Flint outranks Duke! :) |

i dont follow them myself, ill probably promote a few and demote a few. i made the list today from the top all the way down to anyone who has been at least E-7, sergeant first class. ill post it tomorrow, there are a lot of surprises, at least to me. just a hint, hawk is outranked by colton, he outranks flagg, but there is someone else who outranks hawk. tomorrow, same bat time, same bat channel.

I have lots of filecards and full back cards. I like to read them, since they were interesting, but that didn't fully capture all of the activity these figures did.
I too had a quandry that Master Sergeant Hauser was bossing around officers, but I reconciled this as a team effort. Conrad liked bossing people around, got his orders from Hawk, who ranked higher than most of the operations folks. The operations folks were busy doing their job, and Duke was bossy, but they collected a bigger paycheck, so they just let him say his piece. At the end of the day, if Cobra was down, everyone was cool with it. The one thing that I'm teaching my boys is the difference between the toy they are holding and the person holding the toy. We can have a great battle and we all win because we had fun playing. It doesn't matter if our vehicle and driver were destroyed or victorious, as long as we played well and didn't yell at one another (I don't yell, but they are 6 and 3, so that's a work in progress). The 6 year old still likes "his" forces to "win." I keep reminding them, this is all imagination, and it doesn't reflect on them as people what happens during a play adventure. The 3 year old doesn't care if you are playing with him, or he is playing by himself, he just has fun. I strayed a bit from the topic again... |

:) i like flint better then duke anytime :) :) :D :p |
Not too long ago, we had a "dis the gi joe command structure" thread. ie; HATE DUKE!!!
Thing is, some of us did pipe in that we didn't like ANY of the command. Duke was too Aryian. Flint was too machismo. Falcon was portrayed as a tool. Hawk has become a wheel-chaired bound dork. Doesn't leave much in the end. Stalker? Incompetent. Major Barrage? "I have haird like that, just not on my head!" Gen. Colton? A nod to the past that shouldn't have been revisited. Yet, in the end, I would choose Falcon as the man (c'mon, take away the movie and Falcon WAS the bomb) with Flint as 2nd place. Hawk has always been my main man, even if he sits behind a desk in my 'verse. |
