Perimeter Fence made easy!
Ok, how do you make this?:
Well........ Ok, how to make fencing! Well, you need the basics; Fence (chain Link), posts and Barbed or Concertina wire. I was in Home Depot and found this mesh: It is 8 inches high by 25 feet long. It’s pretty durable and stiff. That’s bad because it stays coiled and has the tendency to roll up while working on it! It also has sharp edges! (Ouch!) The good thing is when you bend a corner in it, it STAYS bent! And it is fairly easy to cut with regular scissors. You basically cut length you want. |
For posts, use basic dowel wood from a $8.99 bag of hobby wood from Michaels.
I Chose thicker posts for the ends and thinner ones for the center lengths. Spray paint them primer gray; |
Then Staple the posts every few inches onto the mesh. This takes a little practice. You have to make sure the staples will go THROUGH the mesh and not bend when it hits the mesh. Also, some of the posts are so hard they won’t go in the wood. Use the softer ones you can find in the pack and try not to get frustrated when it takes 15 staples to get 3 good connections.
For the barbed/concertina topping, get 20 – 24 gauge wire (anything less than 20 is too thick and anything greater than 24 is like string!) THIS GAUGE IS TOO THICK!!!!! and coil it around a pole like a broomstick, snow shovel handle or the occasional Bow Staff you have laying around (that you’re good with and a butt-load of gangs at your school want you to join cause of your skills!) |
The coiling should give it that realistic appearance;
The final step; Set the coil over the length of your fence and Viola’! As an aside, I found out from a friend who does models, if you want to make rusty realistic barbed wire, use thin hemp twine and “prick” it every so often to make “barbs” then spray paint it silver and touch it up with rust and orange paints (I’m gonna try this soon, so look out for another “How-To”). Any Questions??? |
wow, i saw the pic the other day and thought it was awesome, but also thought it to hard to make. thanx for the how to.

If I had known how easy it was, I would have done this a LONG time ago! |
me Too Thanks For The Insperation.

That's awesome Frank! I bought a couple of pieces of the perimeter fence from build-a-rama, and was going to buy some more, but instead I'll save my cash and make my own. Your fence looks every bit as good as the "pro" stuff, for a lot less money. Thanks man! :)

Thanks a lot! What a useful guide! ;)
|
And you stil can practice or master the patience virtue, as Dalai-Lama is always teaching :).
Serious talking the fence wasn't a problem to me. I bought some a time ago, but the "barbed wire" this was driving me crazy. Thanks for the tips Frank. |
