I think Rich means a method I use on some of my pictures while using macro mode. I sometimes position a gun or figure or something further out from the subject of the picture and in front of the camera. For example:

It's a method I use to get closer to the subject. I guess its got a lot to do with depth of field too, but I feel I get good results with my camera. Notice how the blur at the things in front of the subject of the pictures are blurry and gradually the blur gets clearer until the subject of the photo is in perfect focus...

I guess layering is a good word for it!

For photoshop layering ask Craig! I'm not even a novice with photoshop yet! Hehehe
