Default do filecards influence your world

i know that a lot of you say that your world is based mainly on the comics. those who say that also go by the filecards. im wondering in your joe world is life line a pacifist? in the cartoon he was, in the comic he was, but in his filecards he talks about fighting and they talk about his weapons. i dont think hasbro made him to be a pacifist, otherwise he would not have had a gun. doc was the pacifist. also wondering if anyone has ever noticed that gung ho has outranked duke a few years. in 92 he became 0-9 or sergeant major, duke was still 0-8 or master sergeant. duke never made it to 0-9 until 97 while gung ho maintained his rank until 97. also has anyone noticed that all fighter pilots have a rank of at least w-4 or warrant officer, and most of the new member after 97 all had higher ranks then the old joes. just some food for thought as i spent all day yesterday looking through every file card and making the correct way the ranks would really be, ill post the results later.

I like the file cards since they give the figures personality rather then them just being molded plastic. As far as whether they influence my Joe world, well I don't have a Joe world per say. I pretty much just collect and display (and take and post occasional pics). I don't do dio stories and probably never will so I have never imagined a world for my Joes.

I mostly go by the Filecards-and yes-my Lifeline carries the pistol he came with.I know Gung-Ho ranks Duke, but remember-in my Joeverse Hawk says"Duke answers to ME and Me alone",rather like Colonel Moore and Sgt.Major Plumley in We Were Soldiers.

Flint and the other officers 'rank' Duke, but my Duke has the respect of the entire Team-and he calls the officers "sir" even when giving them orders.

Also-regardless of Filecard rank,my Joes establish a different Chain-of-Command for each mission-for example-if Flint,Dusty, and Ace were on a mission in the desert-perhaps to capture a Cobra Prototype Aircraft-Flint leads, but Dusty is in charge of safety and survival in the Desert, and Ace is in charge once they get in the air.

Good thread,lehsreh!

Back in the old day, the filecards were EVERYTHING to me. It established what the characters did and stuff. The cartoon portrayals, for the most part, weren't my cup of tea. The Marvel comic was so-so. The DD Comic, 90% didn't float for me. And the movies? NOPE. Therefore, there is no Cobra-LA.

I do, however, reference the cartoon stuff but my world is much more modern/slightly futuristic sc i-fi. The cloning, monster creations, failed experiments, etc. Like you guys know that movies like Aliens, Doom, Predator, and even Star Wars and Star Trek have more influence than the comics and cartoon combined.

As for Lifeline, until I get a good figure of him, he really doesn't exist. Or he retired or whatever. I usually have it so that ALL Joes have basic medical knowledge. They can splint a broken bone, put in IVs, etc. I don't need a special character that says "I AM THE DOCTOR!!!" Ain't no real doctor in Doom, y'know?

As for ranking... Colton and Hawk are on equal footing which leads them to butting heads quite a bit. Duke is the field commander who ALWAYS seems to be injured or out of the picture. lol. Major Barrage, Lt. Graydon (my custom) and Flint are usually the field officers. FALCON would play a HUGE role if Hasbro would make him!!!

When I make up my squads, it is very specific that I would have some sort of leader. So in THE ISLAND, Graydon is top dog. Scarlet was next and then, Luke Ellison's char since he was the 'natural' leader for the Steel Brigade. At the same time, in that story, Graydon was supposed to be there as an observer and Scarlet was supposed to be testing the 3 Steel Brigade members. The Greenshirts in the dio were also under Luke. (forgot the guy's name)

But in Transformations/War For Territory... It was Graydon on top, then Stalker then Beach Head. If those 3 got knocked off, I don't really know who'd be top kick. The ranking is dependent on the story involved.

mmm, so you never even played with your joes when you were a kid???
i understand what you mean max, thats the way it is really in the joe world i think. even if people outrank duke, the joe system is highly flexible, thats the great thing about G.I. Joe. you can be anyone and still be a leader, i bascially just wanted to know for myself who was what and let any others who might want to know know.

Yes, as Flint stated, we read the filecards and do pull some things from it.....but on a whole, we started 25 years ago to switch things up........so filecards, cartoons, comics..........makes no real defining difference to us, we pick and choose!!

Of course I played with my Joes when I was a kid. But I just set them up and had battles or built cool forts out of cardboard and such. I didn't really imagine them so much talking and interacting with personalities. I guess I just didn't or don't have the imagination for it. Kinda why I like this site so much to see all of your imaginations at work.

The filecards are pretty important to me. When I first got into Joe collecting, the filecards were the only Joe story I had, as the cartoon didn't air here at that time, and I didn't know about the Marvel comic until later. But nothing is set in stone. Any aspects of the filecards or comic I didn't like, I just ignored. The cartoon, when I eventually did see it, had no influence on my Joeverse at all, as I prefer the realistic side of things rather than the fantasy side.
