Well the box doesn't really give a great idea of how big it is, however ever since I saw the first pics of it I have felt the thing was more about false space than anything (ie the top floor sections are spread out making it appear larger).
Still doubt I will get it but just curious about it.

Judging from the ToyFair videos, it does seem to be a pretty descent size. I think it measures about 3 feet long or so. Nothing spectacular IMO, and certainly not worth $100+. Why did they make the pit a rolly boat??? That just boggles my mind
In the movie its a giant underground base. So i dont get the rationalization of turning into a stupid transforming boat.

It's not a stupid transforming boat, it's a stupid Mobile Command Center wannabe.

It does look like a boat, though.

In all likely-hood, it will most likely make sense in the movie... we know that Cobra/Mars attacks the PIT, so maybe after the attack it converts into some kinda Mobile Command Center.
Thats my guess, and depending on how big it really is, I may or may not give Hasbro the $100.00. I already plan to fund Hasbro's payroll department with the new Resolute and RoC figures coming out, so getting the MCC/PIT isn't too far fetched.

experience convinces me that its two things. Out side you have a mobile command vehicle that we may or may not see in the movie. But once you open it up it's the PIT. there are alot of examples of this with other play sets. Look at all of the micro machine star wars stuff back about 13 years ago. most of those things opened to reveal something different.
If Hasbro wanted to make playsets truly work and not just a one time "put it out and hope for the best" kinda deal, they would manufacture multiple smaller playsets that connected to form a larger play-verse, and then hammer the idea home by including smaller but crucial parts that were packaged with figures to encourage the non hard core buyers to collect more pieces and thus creating more revenue for the company... they really need to higher me.

I got the boat impression too. It reminds me of those DUKW amphibious troop trucks from WWII.
