Much like G.I.Joe Extreme or Sigma Six?
Its a new verse people, some of the stuff they will keep most will go away and be turned into something new. For better or worse, well for us "old" farts it will be for worse since its not the Sunbow Cartoon nor Marvel Comics we grew up with, for the next generation it will be their G.I.Joe (and they probably look at the sunbow cartoons and the marvel comics with puzzled nausea because of all the campyness there). I figure each generation has their mind on how it "should be" or should not be.
Take it for what it's bound to be, a popcorn flick - if we get some custom fodder for our figures along the way even better.

Sigma Six still fell under GI Joe. It was a theme like Spy Troops, JvC, etc.
The movie, like all movies based off a toy/comic, IS another entity. What we have to really wonder is, how will the movie effect GI Joe as we know it? (I'm thinking of what the X-Men movies did to the comic and whatnot...)

Well, seeing as I no longer read the comics or buy new figures, it doesn't really bother me in the least. If the movie toys flourish they'll do so without my money, and if they bomb and collect dust on the shelves, I couldn't care less.

Well, for reference, the x-men movies had an effect on the comics in that Rogue somehow became younger and a lot of the visuals catered to the movie. I don't know if the X-men are back as they should be (pre-movie) but... I'm just saying, if the movie makes Ripcord, we might see Ripcord always as a black guy. Hawk always w/ a beret. etc

From Wikipedia;
Joseph Gordon-Levitt as Cobra Commander. USA Today reported Cobra Commander is a multiple role.[5] Levitt wore a mask – which was redesigned from the comics because the crew found it too reminiscent of the Ku Klux Klan – and prosthetic makeup underneath.
Uhm...ok, guys...but he's SUPPOSED to be the bad guy! Why don't we cut out the Vipers and the Iron Grenadiers because they remind us too much of Nazi Stormtroopers! And Let's cut out Zartan because he reminds us of Osama Bin Laden?
Ever notice no one bitched that Norsefire in "V for Vendetta" looked too much like Nazis? Or that the Tetra-Grammaton in "Equilbrium" did the same? That's the whole point! Dress these guys SIMILAR to villians of the past and we can "feel" distain and disgust towards them before they even speak a word!
Did anyone show Steven Sommers the pics of Cobra Commander in his helmet or Battle helmet?
Oh, FYI;

The lengths to which people now go to not "offend" anyone is ridiculous, it's political corectness gone mad. Soon we'll only be allowed to watch soppy Disney movies and pretend there's no bad things in the world!

Whilst I don't like the 25th figure, at least it looks like CC. The movie figure is just a freakazoid with no resemblance or relevance to anything "Joe" at all. Yuck!

The movie you noted wasn't intended to sell toys to kids, this one is.
Cobra Commander looks really similar to the Grand Wizard, that's not really something you want to be associated with when your trying to make your brand the most visible it'll be in a long time.
This isn't PC facism, this is going "well do we want our film and toyline to be scrutinized by civil rights groups, and be embraced by hate groups?" Anyone with a brain would say "No"
G.I. Joe isn't art, it's a way for Hasbro to make money. If that means making Cobra Commander look ridiculous, it won't make them lose any sleep.
